Juddering pull-away, neutral rattle, or rough idle? A worn dual mass flywheel will rapidly destroy any clutch fitted to it. We replace DMFs with genuine OEM-grade kits at your home or workplace — typically alongside a clutch replacement so the labour-heavy job only happens once. Same-day call-outs across Essex, Kent, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire and London.

Dual mass flywheels are designed to absorb engine vibration — when they wear out, your car tells you. Catching DMF failure early means we can replace it alongside your clutch and save you a second labour-heavy job months later.
WHAT IS A DMF?
Modern diesels and high-torque petrol engines use a dual mass flywheel (DMF) instead of a traditional solid flywheel. Internal springs and dampers smooth out the harsh torsional pulses these engines produce — protecting the gearbox and giving you a quieter, smoother drive.
TYPICAL LIFESPAN
80–150k
miles
REPLACEMENT TIME
4–6
hours on-site
Strong shudder or vibration in first gear from a standing start — especially noticeable on hills. Caused by worn internal DMF springs no longer dampening engine pulses.
Metallic rattle from the gearbox area while idling in neutral that goes quiet when you press the clutch pedal. A textbook symptom of a failing dual mass flywheel.
A loud knocking, clattering, or clunk noise when starting the engine or switching it off. The DMF's internal stops have started hammering against each other.
Pronounced vibration through the gear lever, clutch pedal, or floor — particularly at low RPM under load. The DMF has lost its ability to absorb torsional pulses.
Slipping or burnt-out clutches well before their expected lifespan are often caused by a failing DMF. Replacing the clutch alone won't fix the problem — both must be done together.
If your diesel has passed 80,000 miles, the DMF is approaching end-of-life regardless of symptoms. Replacing it preventatively alongside the clutch saves a second job later.

A dual mass flywheel (DMF) is a two-piece flywheel with internal springs and dampers, designed to absorb engine vibration before it reaches the gearbox. Almost every modern diesel and many performance petrol vehicles use one because diesel engines produce strong torsional pulses that would otherwise damage the gearbox. The trade-off is that DMFs wear out — typically between 80,000 and 150,000 miles — and need replacing.
The most common symptoms are juddering or shudder when pulling away in first gear, a metallic rattle from the gearbox at idle that quietens when the clutch is pressed, a knocking or clattering sound when starting or switching off the engine, excessive vibration through the clutch pedal or gear lever, and clutch slipping or premature clutch failure caused by a worn DMF damaging the friction plate.
DMFs fail because the internal springs, dampers, and bearings simply wear out from millions of cycles of absorbing engine vibration. Aggressive driving, towing, slipping the clutch, lugging the engine in too high a gear, and remap/tuning that increases torque all accelerate DMF wear. Once the internals fail, the two halves of the flywheel can rock relative to each other — that's what causes the juddering, rattling, and eventual clutch destruction.
We don't recommend single-mass (solid) flywheel conversion for most road cars. While they're cheaper and won't wear out, they transmit all engine vibration straight into the gearbox — leading to noisy gear rattle at idle, harsher gear engagement, and significantly reduced gearbox life. Single-mass conversions are best left to track cars and heavily modified builds. For everyday road use, a genuine OEM-grade DMF is the right call.
We strongly recommend replacing the clutch kit at the same time. The labour to access the DMF is identical to the labour for a clutch replacement, so doing both together saves you the cost of a second job later. Fitting a new DMF behind a worn clutch will quickly damage the new flywheel, and fitting a new clutch onto a worn DMF will destroy the new clutch. They wear together, they should be replaced together.
Most mobile DMF and clutch combo replacements take between 4 and 6 hours from arrival to road test, depending on the vehicle. Larger vans, 4x4s, and vehicles needing subframe removal can take up to 7 hours.
